Comfort food.

On days of vileness and outright mingosity I like to indulge in a variety of things to cheer myself up. Shopping is one of them, sex is another, Diazepam works and going to the gym puts me in good humour. But food is the quickest way to lift this gal's mood.
I have four staple comfort foods, designed to put a blissed out smile on my chops. They are...
1- Mashed potato and gravy, not smooched together, but with the gravy as a moat.
2- Buttery toast, cut in soldiers-arranged in a circle on my blue and white plate.
3- sausages and baked beans- smothered in with white pepper, again the beans must be moat like.
4- bowl of chunky home made chips, covered in salt and vineger.
There, all simple, easy foods, nothing fancy, but yummy. No matter how grouchy I am, a plate of any of the the above cheers me up no end.
What about you lot? What culinary prozac tickles your fancy?

I really try hard to do things on my own without the diazapam, but it is difficult. I lost my get up and go with the death of my Sammy. Nice blog.

Mashed potatoes, sausages and onion gravy. Alternatively mince, carrots and mashed potatoes. Or turkey, cheese and pickle sandwich.

I also like to cook for comfort - not just to eat, I especially like things that cook in an oven - there's something particularly nice about baking a sea bass or making a chicken casserole, even if you're not going to actually eat it.

Oh Barney, don't worry I am having a fine old time today, but I'm hungry and that got me thinking about food. Now more importantly, King or Tayto?

Sauted fat prawns oozeling garlic butter, yummy! Thick French onion soup, slurp! Thickly buttered baguette with fat salty chips (a rare but comforting treat!) - a huge bar of Cadburys whole nut chocolate all to myself - you can probably gather from this I spend most of my life on fish and salad to keep my skinny jeans in use! But a girl can dream.

Dammit Sexy, there is drool on my keyboard. I love prawns, any bloody way at all. And you're right about the jeans, I too am a salad master, but every now and then one must break out the comfort food. OH, tossed salad, red onion, with warm goats cheese and crispy chunks of bacon....divine.

Walls sausages, fried, with Yarden kosher taramasalata. Every Sunday morning without fail, along with crisped Danish thin-cut bacon, an over-easy fried egg and a litre of Nescafe Gold Blend coffee.

PASTA!!! Pasta, pasta & more pasta!!!
OK, me prefer me own red pepperoni sauce, but really any pasta will do. Alfredo sauce, lasagna, ravioli. Even good old Mac & Cheese!

Apart from pasta there am also beef. Nice blood rare steak and baked potato with the works am simply wonderful. Nice thick burger with lots of stuff on it am good too.

And did you know that somewhere on the other side, far up on the seventh level of heaven, there am a mini mall reserved for only God, his family and just a few select seraphim. In that mini mall there am a food court far beyond the comprehension of us mere mortals. And in the food court they serve a drink of pure ambrosia that am in fact the greatest of the manna from heaven. Its flavor am said to be the most divinely inspired pleasurable sensation of all creation! And it taste just like a Dr. Pepper Ice Cream Soda.

Oh yeah, those are good.

I make a mean spicy meatball and spagetti dish, hot as hell but totally great for rainy days. I make the sauce the day before with lots of garlic, red peppers, onion, fresh basil tabasco, cayenne pepper, chopped tomato and a good drop of red wine. Sometimes with sauces the longer you leave them the better they taste and with this one 24 hours is best. Serve with parma cheese grated over the top, a crusty baguette and more wine.

Well, I'm afraid this will mark me as a trailer trash american, but my comfort food is the classic Macaroni & Cheese. If I could get all my nutrients from that and never have to eat anything else, and also if it didn't make one fat, that's pretty much all I would ever eat. Lovely.

And for a hangover: Chinese food. I don't normally eat 'landwalking' animals (I eat some fish, and shellfish if the restaurant doesn't have much good vegetarian fare), but when drunk or hungover, pork fried rice is a GODSEND.

Also I find lately that I crave spinach all the time. Probably an iron thing because of my mostly vegetarian diet. So a nice baby spinach salad once a day would be a treat, and keep things moving along.

And potato chips (you call them crisps)...fantastic. Entire bags in one sitting. No dip needed, just the salty, greasy, crunchy goodness. Salt & vinegar flavored. Unbelievable.

So sorry Finn, I too know the pain of hunger, or rather I did, I have just scoffed a slice of batch bread covered in lashings of butter and topped of with grated chedder and some diced tomato and red onion. Now I feel dandy. Big nod to Barney for that craving.
Andraste, I love salt and vinegar crisps-especially the little bits that are left in the bottom of the bag, and you have to turn the bag almost upside down to finish them off, yum.
I bought a bamboo steamer a few weeks ago from a chinese supermarket, it just plonks over a saucepan and I can now steam all my veggies, oh my, the difference, I like things to have a bit of bite, I like my pasta al dente and my veggies almost crunchy. This thing is fantastic and it only cost 3 euros.

Andraste, crisp sambos are yummy too, two slices of white bread, butter, deposit crisps between bread smoosh down with heel of hand and wolf down.

How can none of the gals said chocolate yet?!?!? Not really a food, but a necessity nonetheless! Anyrate, I'm always a fan of sushi -- it always sounds good, and nice fresh sushi is the best thing ever! That or Mac&cheese, like Andraste said... white trash or no, mac&cheese is always good!

I don't really do food. I mean, obviously I do eat but it's a function of survival for me rather than a sensory experience. I like a good bit of bacon, and duck pancakes are good (strange thing - they appear in every UK Chinese takeaway but no-one in S E Asia even knows what the fuck they are...), but mostly my pleasure comes in liquid form. Seriously, that is not intended as an over-amplification of my internet persona...

A good red wine (and I mean 'good') always does the trick... nice and comforting. Was always big into Guinness but it's hard to drink in the heat over here... I do like a vodka and Irn Bru too, as a little reminder of the old sessions in the bar back home, but Irn Bru is not easy to come by here. And then of course, at the end of the night, a wee drop of whisky. Single Malt of course! Doesn't need to be an expensive one, a Glenmorangie will do, although the Bunnahabhain and Isle of Jura are always ready for when I need that little bit extra flavour.

I cannot find white pepper for love nor lucre in California. I'm drooling at the descriptions of the food, especially the British food, as mince tastes so much better when it's called 'mince' and not 'ground meat'. Americans are good at food but the whole idea of 'ground meat' makes me queasy.

For the comfort foods of home I have to make do with the odd packet of Walkers Prawn Cocktail that British visitors bring me. Andraste, you are spot on about the "salty, greasy, crunchy goodness".

There is nothing on this earth though that can match that peerless pudding, the rum baba. Oh Gods preserve me, the cravings have started again ...

For alternative cravings, go and see the great short story by 'foot eater' on http://fishwhackerswindle.blogspot.com/

Nice put Binty, I like a rum and coke myself, beer, Baileys, gin and tonic, and and white wine, dry and crisp and chilled to perfection on a sunny day...mmmm. And all cocktails. I love coctails the more garish the better.
Sam, welcome. Oh I am so sorry about the white pepper, how can they not have it? What do they use instead?

I'm a bit late coming to your comfort food entry, but I had to skim fast through the comments anyway as I'm in the process of re-training myslef so that Maggie's home made soup is the new comfort food and I can avoid the crisps, chocolate, prawn cocktails, flapjack, chips, sweet & sour chicken etc etc
