Madonna and orphan.

So how do we feel about Madonna possibly adopting a one year old little boy, David, an orphan, from Africa? Well orphan is a stretch as his father is still very much alive.
Round this way it has caused much debate. Etheline and I think she might as well, kid gets a good life, she gets...what ever it is madonna wants and she has ploughed the guts of 3 million into buildling an orphanage. The singer has launched her own charity 'Raising Malawi' to raise aid and support for villages in the impoverished African country.
My eldest sister think it's disgusting as does my mother, that she is buying a baby and that the boy would be better with his natural father. (who placed him in the orphanage becasue he could no longer affford to raise him).
WEll? Any opinions?

I think Madonna is a fucking geebag, although I suspect that's not really relevant.

Strikes me having a little black baby is the in thing. There was no way Madoggy was going to be outdone by Angelina.

I'm sure he'll have a better life being brought up by nannies and helpers and staff and dragged out for opportunistic photoshoots so we can all be reminded, by the fucking Benneton ad that will be Madonna and family, what a great humanitarian she is.

Weird thing is he will probably have a better life. It might have been better if she had raised money so his family could stay together but there you go. As long as the "stars" see charity as fashionable we might as well take advantage.

"Hmmm...I'm bored today. I think I'll adopt a little black kid. Those motherfuckers are so cute."

Well, he'll be rich and coddled, meaning he'll be fucked up, just in a different way to how he'd be fucked up if he was raised in an orphanage.

Personally, I'd opt for the former route to screwing myself up, but that's cos I'm a materialistic fecker.

£500 000 would set the little mite up with an index linked income of about £25 000.

I don't know, her own kids seem pretty together. Madonna does the whole 'one rule for me another for y'all' thing rather well.
If you have the money to do it, why not rescue a child from extreme poverty? Why does it get so many people so upset.

I’m with Twenty on this one – there is something very distasteful about this, sort of my latest accessory is a rainbow child. They did it with dogs and now it's kids. I prefered it when fucked up Hollywood types opted for a pet stone. Still, maybe I’m just jealous, I always wanted to be adoped by some trillionaire and live in the land of milk and honey.

I used to pray when I was small that one day this big fancy car would pull up the drive and a blonde glamourpuss would step from the car, bitch slap my mother about the place and demand to know where her 'stolen child' was. I swear to god I had the whole scenario worked out, I even had a little bag packed on the off chance it might happen.
I totally indentifed with Edmund in Narnia, I wouild have sold my sisters out to the Snow Queen in a frozen heart beat if she had offered me a pony.
Sigh.

Why is she adopting one that has a father, when she can just give the father a few hundred thousand bucks, which she wouldn't miss, and which would enable him to raise his own kid?!

Then she could adopt a REAL orphan. Thereby giving TWO children a better life.

On another note, what the fuck is going on with blogger today? I can't even log in to my own blog and update it! Bah.

Better Madonna than an orphanage. Ideally she will foster the child and give the father free access and help him to get himself together. She gives the impression of being a fairly strict mother ie one who cares which bodes well.

If Madonna was truly charitable she'd give the dad enough money to bring the boy up. There's plenty of AIDS orphans etc. who don't have parents. She could adopt one of them.

Umm, I'm still abit confused where the orphanage comes into it...Maybe Madges money would be better spent on educating these savages as to what an orpanage actually is, as in a place for young children to go when their whole family has been wiped out. Not as in "I'm too fucking lazy so I'll dump my kid here and hope that some rich westerner will pick up my slack."

i lived in malawi for years and i don't think you guys have any appreciation of just how completely horrible things are for the locals. i never thought they were "savages'. from what i have read this was no spur of the moment thing, everyone there knows what is happening, the guy's wife died in childbirth, he just wants a better life for his son than you can get in malawi. i don't blame him and respect his acceptance that madonna will bring the little 'un back from time to time. it is hard there. very hard.

I couldn't care less what her motivations are. The net effect is that some poor wee kid is going to have a better life and she has pumped a whole lot of money into programmes in Malawi to help AIDS orphans.

I'm not a huge Madonna fan or anything but all I can see here is that everybody wins. Her motivations might seem suspect or tacky but, hell, if she wants to give her money away to desperately poor Africans - great! I'm sure her motivations aren't 100% purely philanthropic or selfless - this is Madonna after all, queen of self-promotion - but I just don't care that much about that, and I'm sure the Malawis, who will benefit from the money and media coverage she's brought to them, don't either.

Philanthropists are motivated by reasons bad and good, as are most of us. I'm for giving her the benfit of the doubt on this one because I don't think she takes the job of parenting lightly.

I had a shiver of horror, but at the same time I kind of think that Madonna seems like a reasonably good parent - her kids aren't getting soccer lessons from David Beckham or getting hauled out for football and soccer 6 times a week for photo opportunities a la the Cruise kids....
If she has the money to plough into a bottomless hole (God love Malawi, along with any country in Africa that is not resource rich) and is happy to do it, let her go for her life! The child will most certainly be better off - his father already gave him up through sheer desperation.
Maddy'll let him see the kid - think, PR cynics amongst us...photo ops...remember Live 8 with the girl from Ethiopia?

So, to summarise, I am divided. Angelina Jolie has already set a celebrity precendent .
It's going to happen. I don't know if it's right.
