Nanny State!

Twenty Major had a velly good rant this mornng about beer, or the lack of being able to buy beer when ever he sees fit. And he is bloody right.
But this takes the god damned biscuit! I was in SuperQuinn getting my weekend shopping (Wine, wine, veggies, eggs, oranges, yoghurt, chicken, cous cous, cat food) and of course two packets of disprin paracetemol. I carried said groceries to the checkout, stood bored rigid listening to Doreen cashier and her friend Imelda packer rattling on about Doreen's husband's back problems and the fact that Imelda won't go to the doctor blah chee di rah... when suddenly Doreen lights on my tablets and says...
'Sorry love, you can't buy two packs.'
'Hahhaha' I said, thinking she was joking.
'I can put this one back for ya.'
'Wait, you're serious?'
'Yes, we're not allowed sell two packets at a time.'
'Why not?'
'It's against the law?'
'It's against the law?' I spluttered. 'Why? Why would it be against the law?'
'It's the kids,' Imelda packer says, 'it's to stop them getting too many tablets at one time.'
'But I"m not a kid!' I said in a childish high pitched tone.
'You can buy another pack in the chemists around the corner.' Doreen says helpfully, 'or come back in and buy a second pack.'
'But this is ridiculous.'
'Remember,' Imelda says to Doreen with a wink, the kids used to be dropping them into the can of coke and drinking it.hahah.'
'I bet's it's a long timme sisce you did anyting like that!' Doreen cackles 'theeheheh.'
Well, ignored and flabbergasted I paid for my goods -the ones I was legally allowed take!- and made my way home. So here I sit, down a packet of disprin and raging, oh yes, fuming at the stupidity of this fucking country!
And now I have a headache!

My favourite visit when I go to the US is to the drugstore to get those tubs of 500 paracetemol (or acetaminophen as they call it) and 500 of ibuprofen for about $8 each.

Two huge fingers to the thieving drug company gougers over here and another two to the idiots who brought in that law.

Anyway I thought the excuse was to reduce suicides? That was another huge success then.

Abso-bloody-lutely. I usually bring back painkillers from Spain, but I'm out.
How the blood hell can not allowing a person to buy two pack of disprin at the same time prevent suicide? Especially if the person can just come back in and buy them seconds later? I don't get it, I really really don't. It's the stupidest thing I've heard in AGES!
Last time I came over from Spain I brought inhalers -for a friend who needs them, sleeping tablets, Strong pain killers, anntibiotics and anything else I could get my grubby little mitts on over-the-counter. It's actually cheaper to fly there get the gear and fly back that try to get medical stuff here.

Wow! That is pretty stupid...to my knowledge, you can buy as much aspirin, ibuprofen, just about any over the counter painkiller as you want here...but

Over here the insurance companies won't let you buy more than one month's worth of birth control pills at a time ... used to be you could get six months at a time, or at least three months at a time. And I can't call in a prescription before the third week of the last batch. Now I ask you...why is this?Is Estrogen something that the kids are handing out and gobbling down at raves now? Believe me, the world is a much nice, safer place with me on estrogen than without it. They should be letting me stockpile it.

Yeah, my Ma and sisters do the Spanish thing all the time. For some of the heavy duty stuff like heart drugs etc, you save a small fortune.

I just love the fact that you can get Augmentin or Distaclor or whatever and sort yourself out when you get a non-viral infection.

Beats spending 50 quid at the doctors to be told you have a throat infection - "I bloody know, that's why I can't swallow, now give me the damn prescription"

And all subsidised by the Spanish taxpayer. Our way of getting back at them for their fishermen :-)

It's not so bad.

1. When you got home, you should have mixed your dispirin with a can of Coke, and avoided the headache.

2. Under the law, the clerks probably tell the kids what they told you: go outside, come back and buy a second; or go to the chemists and buy the other one. Kids everywhere, of course, do not do what they are told, so no problems.

Groan, thats why this stuff should not be sold in supermarkets. Its not like cashiers have a clue what theyre talking about. Disprin is not so bad but paracetamol can cause serious liver damage. Its not kids, its adults taking uniflu and paracetamol at the same time and being rushed to hospital to get liver transplants from paracetamol poisoning. Drugs r bad m'kay? Id go for anything with codeine instead. Wonder cure.

Sinéad, with twenty SuperQuinn bonus points I can buy the sharpist Japanese knife set I want at a discount! But not two packets of disprin.
Drugs are great! I won't have anyone saying otherwise.

At the warehouse-type stores here, and even Wal-Mart, here in the States, you can buy giant bottles (1,000+) of aspirin, acetaminophen (your paracetemol), ibuprofen, whatever you want. All the cool people kill themselves with guns, anyway.

Unfortunately, you can no longer buy more than 3 packets of freakin' cold medicine, for Christ's sake, because supposedly tweakers buy it to cook speed. They have changed the law to limit the amount you can buy.

Now, if you are buying cold medicine to cook speed, you are the dumbest person on the planet, because there are far cheaper ways to make it.

So now, when I have a cold, I would have to walk up to Wal-Mart, 2 miles away, because I can only buy enough for 2 days.

Screw that. Wal-Mart usually has 20 checkout lanes open, so I just go to one after another. I can buy 3 packs of 24 tablets on each lane. Really effective laws, huh?

My Dad got all wacky in the head when he was 82 years old and at first we though he had a stroke. Alas, he had simply taken a few too many OxyContin. Upon cleaning out his house we found over 750 OxyContin tablets that his pain management doctor had prescribed!

There's a limit on how much paracetemol you can buy at once but they'll give an old man that many narcotics to manage on his own? What's wrong with this world?

Oh, the money I could have made on the street with all of that OxyContin. Sometimes I really lament the fact that I'm basically a good person.

Hmmm.I think the worst part of that fiasco was the "I bet it's a long time since you did anything like that!" Fucking cheek of her.You should have planted a head on her and given yourself a good reason for the headache.

Yes Fmc, I read the Twenty rant too. Here's another good one... 2 family members were travelling down the country over the weekend and went to the station to get single tickets since they're getting a lift back... "No, you can't get single tickets on a Friday..." I kid you not, forced them to buy return tickets.

BTW I think all these driving rules are way nanny state too, don't you? What is it with them? I can drive perfectly safely at 120mph, with a few beers in me while chewing a pack of paracetamol, slaloming between the cats' eyes, and texting the missus to warm the mattress, I'm on me way home...
