Tori Amos.

Okay, I give up, I tried, I tried some more, I listened to some people say I should try again but then I had to just say 'HOLD UP YO! FUK DAT SHEET.'
No more. I give in. I freely admit it. I just don't get Tori Amos. To me everyone of her songs sounds just like the one that went before it, tuneless warbling with piano. And frankly she makes my brow furrow. And I don't want any more wrinkles. So no, no to Tori. And also no to people who think she's the next musical christ or something.
No I say.
I'm going for a swim now.

I was in a French class with a fellow once in Minnesota who declared he liked la musique alternative, par example Tori Amos. Since when did Tori Amos become alternative music?

I guess I'm not a fan because right now I can't think of any of her songs. I know I know them, they just aren't coming to mind and I can't be bothered to look any up. So not a fan then.

God, she's awful, and so are all her imitators. Warbling, pretentious, 'sensitive' shite. Her music gives me the shits.

Oh delightful, I forgot to bring my goggles, swallowed eight gallons of water and had the ear talked off me by a rather sweet old dear as I clung -gasping and trying not to retch- to the wall of the pool. It's her daughter's wedding on Thursday, I have all the details, ALL the details.
I must say I"m rather pleased with this Tori puzzlement, makes me feel right at home. If we were all in a beer garden right now, necking pints I'd probably start weeping.

I never got her either, and agree that "they all sound the same" — except for the song "Cornflake Girl" which I think is brilliant and I love with all my heart.

Guessing your not a Norah jones fan either then?

Annie, that's the only song of hers I don't mind. But for the life of me I can't warm to the rest. Or tell them apart.
Norah's very...she makes me sleepy. But I don't find her very offensive or anything, just sleepy.
Here, while I'm at it, I don't get Bjork either. shouty shouty girl. Words all over the place, squaks, squeaks, flibbirty gibbits. No, 'I would have to say, 'OI, BJORK! NAAAAAAOOOWWW.'
I wouldn't go across the road to see a concert of hers.

Gah! She looks like Cher!

I really liked her for about a month in collge. Ever since I've been wondering why she doesn't take all of her money and invest in therapy... or at least some really fun drugs.

Blogger fatmammycat said...

You know Sass, she does have a big of the old Cher going on in that photo. I do like Cher though, I love that she's 175 and still touring about the place on a very large motorbike. Plus she was in Moonstruck, and for that reason alone she can have any pass she likes.

I apologise in advance but I am a bit partial to "professional widow". Rest of her albums, despite my best attempts, didnt grab me. Best of luck with the marathon training FMC...managed a slow but delighra to get past finish line 5hours plus in 2004 whilst 10 days preggers. The Dublin supporters on the way are excellent and just will you to go go go...you'll have no problems, sounds like your training is going sooo well. Enjoy.

Oh, I think I might like "Professional Window" too. Is that the one that sounds like she's saying "honey bring it close to my lips ah"? If so, then I like it.

BUT ALL THE OTHERS SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME.

Swimming against the tide here as the lone Tori Amos fan willing to stick my head up above the wall.

I've been a fan since the first album and have seen her in concert countles times. IMO her last couple of CDs weren't as strong as her ealier stuff so I can understand how they wouldn't appeal to all but her die-hard fans but had at least a few good songs on them.

The latest release is her most solid effort since her "Pele" and "Choirgirl" days. I predict "Big Wheel" & "Bouncing Off Clouds" will do well on the radio. Personally I love "Code Red" and "Beauty of Speed".

Oddly enough, whilst "Cornflake Girl" was one of her most commercial hits it is my least favourite song and was overplayed to death!!!

4:57 a.m.

oh BTW as much as I love Tori Amos's music I don't love all her songs... "Programmable Soda" could have been left off the new CD!!!

I used to really like Tori Amos. I still listen to some of her stuff. The less anguished CDs are better than the other ones.

Here are my problems with her: she is extremely derivative, with melodies and ideas that are not original except for her ability to express pain, anger, aggression, and "deadness" in music.

Now she's expressing a lot less torment and I like her stuff better. I still think that she's very derivative though. her new CD, American Doll Posse, is an obvious rip-off of old rock songs. for example, her song "girl disappearing" has the same melody as "famous blue raincoat," which she has performed. her song "dragon" is very similar to some of Joni Mitchell's experimental stuff. etc. etc. etc.

I personally think that without the appeal to rape and other trauma survivors, she would not have gotten famous because besides expressing anger and anguish, she doesn't have much to say.

this was my experience. I was abused myself and got into a cycle of listening to her a lot until I started to, well I hate the phrase "move on," but try to push through things.

I'm not saying her only good music is when she's agonized. just that she was really (imo) angry and creepy for a long time, and now she's lost that, which is great. but she's so derivative there are not many ideas left, unless you can ignore her similarity to (imo again) other better melodies.

I don't think I'll ever say I hate her, and I'll keep listening to some songs on and off, but I'm glad to have the agony behind me.

What I don't like about Tori is I think there is truth to the criticism that she was exploiting her pain. While I believe she is telling the truth about rape/miscarriage, etc., I also think that as she says herself, she has always liked to shock people.

so given the choice between a more thoughtful way of dealing with rape, vs. expressing agony and anguish over and over in a really creepy way, she went for the shock value every time, it seemed to me.

I'm not saying that she used it as a "photo opportunity," but that she chose to be outrageous in a way that made me feel some of her expressions of pain, creepiness, and anger were not genuine.

3:54 p.m.
Anonymous Anonymous said...

and I agree that her first (real) album was really good. but I think you all are right about it being the same stuff over and over after that.

except starting with boys for pele, she really ramped up the creepiness factor, in my opinion. that CD, Choirgirl, and Strange Little Girls are just....well, more of her showing how "out there" she can be.

3:58 p.m.
Anonymous Anonymous said...

and now she's gone off the deep end.

her "music" and "singing" is so bad that she's gotta use a knife and gun as props, which is supposed to be "healing." complete and total b.s. and before you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, as an almost-teenager I was physically and sexually assaulted by a group of boys with knives and guns, and then there was that memorable moment when one of them tried to burn down the house...

I'm not kidding. the only reason she pulls this sensationalist shit is b/c she doesn't have talent anymore. her obsessive fans are saying that if you don't like the knife and gun thing (the knife, she rubbed all over herself, erotically. ewwwww.) that she did in the concert on 11/6/07, then you've never experienced violence or some shit like that. bullshit.

I think it's the other way around for sane people, who unlike Tori, having gone through something like this, they have a really healthy respect for weapons.

she's a no-talent loser and her career is crashing and burning. next thing you know, she'll be doing radio shows with Howard Stern.

her albums are all different i don't see she repeats anything instead she surprises every time! her last gig was amazing!

Dark Energy. It can be found in religious extremists, in cheerleaders. To come to the conclusion that Dark signifies mean and malevolent would define 75% of the Universe as an evil force.
Alternatively, to think that some cheerleaders don't have razors in their snatch is to be foolishly unarmed. T. amos.

Well obviously everyone has different tastes...no matter how much people swear Neil Young is amazing I just don't get him. With all that said, Tori is my absolute favorite artist - her piano playing has a lot to do with it - I'm a pianist (a very good one too) and I am in awe of what she can play and even sing while doing it. Her voice is angelic and her lyrics are poetic (admittedly I rarely know exactly what she's singing about - rather I get a feeling and for that I connect on an emotional level). I like how she's rebellious and devious... on the surface she appears to be another lilith fair reject but she's quite punk rock underneath her composed veneer.
