A question of time.

Day two of no coffee. I have roughly one million too much work today and one million too many meetings and one trillion phone calls and emails to make-and you must know how I feel about phones at this stage.
However, before I shoot off into town to throttle a PR gal with my bare hands, I would like to pose a question, two in fact.
At what time do you consider going to bed 'late'?
And, At what time do you consider getting up 'early?'.

Hmm, in the land of the Drumms LATE to bed is anytime after, say, 1.45am... and Early to rise is about 6am. As it happens I find it much easier to be up for the exceptional early morning than I do for the run-of-the-mill morning (8.30ish).

During the week anytime after 2 am is late nut at weekends its be around four before Id call it a late night.
My normal time to get up is seven as work begins at eight, if its any time before siz its early.

I have to say I find it much easier getting up when the sun is shinning which is nearly every day here.

This version makes more sense:
During the week anytime after 2 am is late but at weekends it would have to be after four, before I'd call it a late night.
My normal time to get up is seven as work begins at eight, so if its any time before six its early.

I have to say I find it much easier getting up when the sun is shinning which is nearly every day here.

I love my sleep. I do believe I need lots of it - minimum of 7.5 hours per night.

Therefore if I'm in bed after midnight (during the week), then it's late. And if I have to get up before 07.00, then it's early.

But it all depends, like. And I also find it easier to get up exceptionally early on occassion than on a normal morning (8ish).

I must be like a kid because anything after 10:30pm is very late to me. Before 6am is early.
Good luck with your busy day. Is the non-coffee-ness part of a health plan? I could never do that and have such a busy day as yourself.....I love stopping at garages even on short journeys to buy a cup of coffee, I know all the good garages, me ;-)

Late, on a weeknight, is after 11pm. Early is anytime before 7am.

And I do agree, it's much easier to get up very early during the summer, when it's sunny and dewy and lovely. I skipped a LOT of school as a child because during the winter it's still dark until 7:30 or 8am - and I cannot...CANNOT get up in the dark. Can't do it, makes me feel ill.

Isn't it ironic, though - during the work week, when I HAVE to get up, I can barely drag my ass out of bed in time, but come Saturday morning, I'm up with the birds and I couldn't sleep more even by forcing it?

Maybe ironic isn't the word.

And yes, it is 6:53 here and I've just been on the elliptical for a half an hour.

So I didn't finish that thought...

Okay, BUT - with all this cleansing, I'm finding it much easier to get up on the weekdays as well, for some reason.

I'll shut up now.

Hmmm that's what I thought. My mother claims sinceI don't 'go to be til all hours' it's no wonder I don't get up early, but when I read the comments it seems I'm sort of normal. True, I am inclined to faff about until about 1 am normally and the try really really hard to get up about 9am, but last night I went to bed just after 10 15, fell asleep almost immediately and I still struggled to get up at 9am this morning ( to be honest if I hadn't as much work on I'd probably have stayed asleep until 11.) Also, the no coffee thing-even though it's only the second day- is a bit wearing. I'm sure I feel a touch strange.
I guess when I'm not bowled over by insomnia I'm just a long sleeper. But this does not bode well for my new plan to get up at 7 am very much at all.
I'll have to start going to bed at 8pm or 9pm...
How do folk get into a routine of getting up early?

A: Have children.

Off now to grind some nicely roasted arabica coffee beans... then into the coffee gizmo on top of the stove... scrumtious. Truly.

I sleep way more in the winter than in the summer, but this may be because we have an east-facing window and the sun comes and pokes at my retinas around 6am, which is when I usually get up in the summer (more like 8:30-9 in the winter). I always go to bed at 10-10:30. I'd go a little less rigid, but I've found in the last few years that if I skimp on sleep, I start to leave the land of the sane people and have short-lived but acute relapses of anxiety and depression. So I sleep.

Well If you want my advice I would not try to go to bed earlier if you want to get into a pattern of getting up early.

THe more you sleep the more you need. Decide that you will get 6.5 hours a night and just keep getting up early. Then if you want a lie in once at the weekend fine. Of course if you do feel jaded during the week a power nap between 6.30 and 7 in the evening does wonders before hitting the town.

Sorry I cant help with the rain but it may help you to know that Mrs Macdara just rang telling me its 41C outside ( Im in AC and no windows open ) she siad it was so hot she could only buy two new pairs of shoes before having to go to a restaurant.

Before 7 - early (kids)
After midnight - late (tiredness due to kids)

Kids have been the most persuasive tool in early rising I've ever had. All these mysterious early morning clankings and bangings and oops smashings? Aaaagh, smashings! from the kitchen/rest of house fill the early mornings with a mystery and tension you just have to get up and investigate.

Oftentimes at night I'm up soothing bad dreams or fetching water or taking someone for a piddle 'cos they're too scared in the dark. Something will have to be done about the P Husband, that way.

Now, try as I might, I can't not wake up at 7am no matter what.

And did I mention the worry - the gnawing midnight worries about possible disaster scenarios involving your children?

Get yourself a couple of nippers. You'll never sleep well again nut nor will you ever sleep in.

See that's the awful thing about children Sam, you can't lock them into the garage at night and not get funny looks over it.
Medbh, yes, I'm starting to see what you mean, although Andraste did say the first few days would be rough. I'm off all caffeine so even a cup of tea is out. Also no hooch.Did I mention the no hooch, not for three weeks, did I mention that?
Sam, be a dear and tell Conan that it shouldn't be too difficult to trace his address and dispatch a mother there, would you?
Right ho, off to the butchers I go.

Going out than 6am is late and 12pm is early.

I am jet lagged at least 3 times a week.

Before 6am early after 11pm late - for me. I second all the comments regarding kids. However I was primed for this, my job requires that I get in early, (catch Europe at the end of their day, East coast in the middle, and at the end of my day I catch Japan). When I first started working in Tech Support, I dreaded getting up early(I never went to bed before 3am when I was on college), but then I realized I missed the bad traffic both ways, and in the summer I could head out surfing after work. Kids have put a serious dent in my ability to do the latter.

I don't think it matters what time you get up as long as you get around 8 hours, apparently more, and less are not good for one over the long haul.

Giving up Coffee! The only advantage of that is that if you stay off it for long enough, it will feel like a hit of E when you eventually succumb to the demon joys of caffeine again. Least it did to me :)

No more lazing in bed with kids right enough, FMC, and I used to LOVE to laze in bed. The real killer for me was kids plus a postgrad bit of studying - murder! I just HAD to get up, get on and shut up moaning about it.
The real test about too early and too late for me is - how's the amour? Too tired = too late or too early! You just should NOT be too tired for amour! What d'ye reckon?

I reckon armour mid afternoon/early in the evening is far better than last thing at night. The big question is before or after tea time?

8:29 p.m.
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The question is why? Why would you give up caffine and booze at the one time? Have you become saint cat over night.

8:34 p.m.
Blogger fatmammycat said...

Well now, that's complicated, firstly I'm upping the marathon training over the next few weeks and I feel my body could do with all the help it gets as I increase the milage. Secondly, Andraste did it and said she felt like the bomb afterwards and that impressed me greatly. I would like to feel that good without the aid of narcotics or rum.
Thirdly, I'm such a filthy lush MacDara, that three weeks clean will be like two years off to normal people.
See?
Doesn't everyone feel like doing a clean out every now and then?( says she who was sniffing the lid of coffee jar earlier)

The paramour is giving up? But it's only been a day?

What you need, my girl, is a cheering team. We, we will be tht cheering team, fmc. We'll get you through it just like Andraste.

Altogether now give us an N, give us an O, give us an F-U-N!

Hm. You might want somebody a bit more upbeat for the actual cheer part, but hell, I'm right there with you all the way baby! Not with you in the participatory sense, 'course - I'm not mad - but I can nod really enthusiastically and do the rahs. And living in Murka for the past 10 years means I can say "You go girl!" now too. (You have to sit an exam)

What's your opinion on decaf?
(Ducks)

I don't mind it meself. It might help a bit.

Alight then - my job is a seven day thing so I dont do 'weekends' and 'weekdays' cause I could be in any time.

So, workdays I usually try to be at least curled up in bed trying to sleep by 2am and I am up at 8am.

Days off - I go to sleep about 4am and am up around 9-10am. Yes.

Going to bed late -- The sun is up.

Waking up early -- Before noon.

The Spouse Sparrow and I take shifts with the Nestling Sparrow, hence the weird hours. He gets approximately 5 hours of semi-uninterrupted sleep, and I get the same.
