Prostitute? Interpreter? All the same to the Sindo!

Oh I"m very happy about this. Not only were Liam Lawlor's poor family put through the horror of tabloid hacks at their worst, but that poor woman was besmirched and her reputation sullied by the rags. 'A teenage prostitute' I believe she was described.
From the indo, hee....

Ukrainian woman Julia Kushnir has settled her libel action against all five newspapers over their reporting of the Liam Lawlor Moscow car crash which she survived.

A number of apologies have been read out in court on behalf of the papers accepting that the articles wrongly referring to the translator as "hooker" should not have been written.

The 31-year-old, who lives in Prague, was working as an interpreter for Mr Lawlor in October 2005 when the car they were travelling in crashed between Moscow Airport and the city centre.

The former Fianna Fail TD and his Russian driver were killed.

Articles appeared in a number of papers over the following days referring to the girl who was travelling with Mr Lawlor as a prostitute.

She settled her action against The Observer at an earlier date for €100,000.

Ms Kushnir sued the Irish Independent, the Sunday Independent, the Sunday Tribune, the Sunday Mirror and the Sunday World for libel.

The latter was due to start this morning, but the jury was told that all cases had been settled.

Apologies were read out stating that the articles, including one which was headlined "Lawlor smash girl is a hooker", were totally false and grossly unfair to her and her family and that she had never worked as a prostitute.

She has also received substantial damages thought to be in excess of €500,000.

500k is a lot of money. Shame she didn't accept 400k and the head of Barry Egan on a plate.

What!? The Sunday World got sued for libel!? Does that mean that there may be, on occasion, slightly dubious falsehoods told in that bastion of sense, truth and all-that-is-pure?
My world is falling apart, here.

Right, because any young woman has to earn her wages through turning tricks instead of being smart and educated. What other answer could there be?
Barf.
Good for her for getting them to pay for it.

To be honest Medbh, it's worse. I don't think they even gave her that much consideration, she was just a convenience, someone to be used to slur the politician Liam Lawlor. It suited them to use her to destroy his reputation, never mind what it did to hers.
But, once again, Sunday World and the Sindo, I never expect any better.

Every time I think of that Newspaper group, I think of what Mary Ellen Synon wrote in their rag. My sister is in a wheelchair:

It is time to suggest that these so-called Paralympics . . . are - well, one hesitates to say 'grotesque'. One will only say 'perverse'.

"Surely physical competition is about finding the best - the fastest, strongest, highest, all that. It is not about finding someone who can wobble his way around a track in a wheelchair, or who can swim from one end of a pool to the other by Braille."

"Yet we are supposed to imagine that there is some kind of equivalence in value between what the cripples do and what the truly fastest, strongest, highest do. There isn't."

I don't have words to describe what I think of that newspaper. They didn't even fire her for it, she left of her own accord.

Very hurtful woman. But they didn't fire her for it. She resigned because they apologised - only after a lot of pressure - and she stood by what she said.

awful, awful, awful.

Sad to think that that woman's name will forever be smeared, long after people have forgotten she won her case. The papers may lose some readers, journalists who were not involved will no doubt be tarred with the same brush - but no one will remember the names the lazy, incompetent editors and reporters responsible.

I like the way the bastards left it to the court steps to make their offers. They could have saved that woman a lot of grief by withdrawing their shite long ago and offering her restitution.

Seeing her picture today makes the whole thing clearer.
The media loves to tear down smart and beautiful women.

The Sunday World and the Sindo are two filthy rags Medbh, nothing surprises me with them.

Glad for the interpreter, sindo is a rag but can't feel sorry for corrupt Lawlor- he had no reputation to speak of, he was a corrupt bully who refused to fess up when caught with his hand in the till and cost us taxpayers even more money. Being caught in a car with a hooker could only improve that jailbirds rep.
