Fake tan.

A school head mistress in England is trying to ban pupils who attend her school from wearing fake tan.
If you had children of school going age would you support this ban or not?

Personally I think- although I find bright orange fake tan ridiculous- it's a typical teenage attempt to be 'individual' while being exactly the same as everyone in your year. I have seen some SPECTACULARLY bad tan jobs on uniformed girls AND boys in the last year, streaky orange legs, dark funny looking knuckles, brown necks but with ghostly white faces. Yes it looks stupid, but they're kids,a nd it's not exactly harming anyone.
ON the other hand I see some parents are all for it, putting fake tan in the same bracket as piercings and over the top hair dyes (which I also don't really disapprove of, it's only hair).
What do you reckon, overkill or quite right?

Disclaimer, Etheline and I once tangoed ourselves to ridiculous effect. It took days to wash off and that experiment was never repeated, I now have a perfectly good farmer's tan from running outdoors. Naked, I look not unlike a skewbald horse.

I think the headmistress can make whatever rules she likes in her own school, as she is responsible for the image presented by the school, and in these days of league tables and stiff competition, schools have to be on their toes full time. I have to wear two hats on this one. In my schooldays, many students greatest pleasure was in breaking school rules and being as subversive as we could get away with. So strict rules are good, as the pleasure of breaking them (and getting away with it) is all the sweeter. If there are no boundaries, students with unlimited freedom will go ape. With my second hat on, as a mother, I think the more children have to conform, wear the same uniform, fit into a fixed structure, the less likelihood of being bullied for being different in any way.

I think my two hats are the same! How folk change when they grow up! Seriously though, I was at a birthday party for a friends 7 year old recently and one of the mothers brought her little girl wearing little transparent high heels with a little short dress and full make up. She was a beautiful child, but it made me feel queasy.

Im not too sure about this. I can understand the need to impose conformity and sympathize with the resultant desire for rebellion.

Think I'll park my bum firmly on the fence on this one. Ouch! Splinters!

You CANNOT ban fake tan. What would we laugh at if that happened?

Ronseal quick drying woodstain. does exactly what it says on the tin.

Yikes Shebah, at 7? I'd be squiked out too.
In my old school you weren't even allowed wear two rings on on hand.

But huzzah for oompa loompas, like Docky says they make me laugh on a regular basis.

I recall your experiment with Etheline on the fake-n-bake, and still get a chuckle out of it...if there is a way to get a "natural"-looking tan from a bottle, I don't know of it.

What I can't understand is what shade people are going for. You have black and brown people the world over wishing they were lighter, and willing to buy products specially designed to bleach one's skin, and pasty white people the world over wishing they were darker, and willing to bake oneself like a turkey and buy products specially designed to darken one's skin.
I guess it's possible to see both as an endorsement of multiethnic couplings?

I'm just glad I moved north, where I can be as freckly pale as God intended (without anyone taking notice of my paleness), rather than being always the odd woman out at home in the South.

They should be allowed wear fake tan provided they are also sporting a burqa.

I think the guy in your picture is doing "blue steel" unless i'm very much mistaken.

The disturbing thing is that more school girls want to be like Jordan or Britney Spears rather than any athelete, scientist or stateswoman.

I'd say that's more 'Magnum'.
And AYE! SInce when does pale = unlovely? What's wrong with just being a gentle pink or creamy alabaster?
But then teenagers being teenagers like hues and tones of many colours, I excuse them. Thirty something year old women in varying shades of "mammalian clementine' ( how brilliant) not so much.

I think it's a harmless trend.
It works the same as hair dye in my view.
They'll look back on their orange adolescence and cringe.

Having rules allows kids to use theri imagination to get around them, and any rebel can rebel relatively harmlessly.

i reckon thogth that fake tan should be allowed - not much harm there) as long as kids also have to do their own laundry to get the rubbed off bits out.

Grimsab- if you move North in the UK a fake tan is practically mandatory! In the South it has become fashionable to be pale and interesting or very lightly bronzed but up North is footballers wives country where the more tangoed you look the better to catch that rich footballer.

The fence is the right place to be on this one. As bad as fake tanning is (it looks bad and putting those chemicals on your body is probably not the healthiest thing either) there are so many things kids could be doing that are worse. Plus, if you let them have at it, the style will change soon enough and they'll outgrow it. Why make something so funny a taboo when it'll die of its own accord anyway...

Hmm, I odn't know that it's entirely harmless. If you google the ingredients, and their effects, and then you consider that our skin absorbs about 60% of wat we put on it - add to that the amount of foundation and general makeup a lot of teenage girls wear, plus deodorant and perfume and moisturiser and body cream and shampoo = toxic teens...
